The skills system clicked for me when I stopped thinking of them as shortcuts and started treating them as the actual architecture. The agent's behavior is the sum of its instruction files - which means the folder structure IS the design.

Get that wrong early and you're refactoring under load. I moved from MacBook to a dedicated Mac Mini around month 4 specifically because the credential isolation got complex enough to need separate accounts. Wrote about the full progression (including the skills/folder logic) here: https://thoughts.jock.pl/p/how-to-build-your-first-ai-agent-beginners-guide-2026 - covers the beginner-to-functional arc without the theory overhead.

"Teach Claude your workflows once" is the right framing — the re-explaining tax is real, and skills are the only honest fix for it. Worth noting the same logic applies one layer down: once your workflow lives in a file, the CLI in front of it becomes swappable. That's the itch behind opencc (github.com/p32929/opencc) — it points the Claude Code CLI at free OpenAI-compatible endpoints, so the workflow you taught once isn't locked to one bill.
